Ride Along on one of our TOURS!!

Just about 3.5 weeks until the start of the 2nd International Infant Toddler Conference! We are getting very excited and very busy here in Tulsa getting all of the prep work done for the big event!

A new addition to the conference will be FREE optional tours to two local child care programs . The tours will take place Thursday morning April 14th and will be leaving the Downtown Double Tree Hotel promptly at 9:00 AM and will return at 12:00PM. The tours will run con-currently and will be going to Educare II- Hawthorne http://www.educaretulsa.org/ and Rosa Parks Early Childhood Center http://www.unionps.org/index.cfm?id=399.

Educare II- Hawthorne is the second of three currently planned Educare sites in Tulsa and follows the model developed by the Chicago based Ounce of Prevention Fund, which seeks to intervene in generational poverty and promote best practices in early childhood education. Educare II is a state-of-the art facility that serves Infants, Toddlers, and Preschool age children from low-income families (in accordance with federal poverty guidelines); children with special needs and children learning English as a second language.

Rosa Parks Early Childhood Center is located in the Tulsa-Union public school district and is a program that serves three year olds. Rosa Parks has a simple mission: to enhance the development of very young children and promote healthy family functioning. Rosa Parks ECC is currently seeking accreditation through NAEYC and practices the philosophies of Reggio Emilia throughout the program.

Both facilities are interesting and fun to visit, a trip to either one is a real treat!

We hope that you will be able to join us on one of the tours! Space is limited so sign up now by sending an e-mail to Stacey Mwongozi mailto:smwongozi@csctulsa.org
Please designate which site you would like to visit!

Registration is still available for the conference; if you have not signed up please do so by visiting our website at http://www.ccrctulsa.org/

Less than a month to go!

In an effort to continue to highlight our presenters work we would like to share an article that was published by NAEYC in Young Children Magazine in January of this year.

The article is written by Enid Elliot and Janet Gonzalez-Mena two of our presenters and the authors of the book We’re Not Robots: The Voices of Daycare Providers.

The article highlights the development of self-regulation in infants, the topic that Janet Gonzalez-Mena will be speaking on during the conference.

Learn more about NBCDI and the development of a local chapter during the 2nd International Infant Toddler Conference!

For the past 38 years, the National Black Child Development Institute (NBCDI) has been steadfast in its mission to improve  and advance the quality of life for Black Children and their families through advocacy and education. In many regions of the country, NBCDI is represented by affiliate chapters that provide direct services at the community level. Three individuals, Shyra Burrell, Nichol Noble, and Stacey Mwongozi, have stepped forward to organize a team that will assist in developing a Tulsa Interest Group of NBCDI. To ensure an affiliate chapter will be able to support the mission and vision of NBCDI and become a self-sustaining organization that will implement effective programming for their community, the national organization has certain guidelines that must be followed by the organizing group. The organizing team must exist as an Interest Group for one year before being considered for affiliate chapter approval by NBCDI. The organizing team in Tulsa will begin its journey in the spring of 2011. Dr. Carol Brunson Day, President and CEO of NBCDI, will visit Tulsa to be a keynote speaker and presenter at the 2nd International Infant & Toddler Conference in April. If you are interested in learning more about NBCDI, please visit their website at www.nbcdi.org. If you would like more information about how you can join the organizing team in the Tulsa area, please feel free to contact Stacey Mwongozi at smwongozi@yahoo.com.

Tulsa is looking forward to lovely Spring days ahead!

As we dig out of the snow after the blizzard we experienced two days ago we cannot help but look forward to warm Spring weather! The weather is always changing in Oklahoma and while we cannot promise that the weather will not be exciting, we can promise that the temperature will not begin with a minus sign!

During the 2nd International Infant Toddler Conference April 14-16, 2011 we can hope for lovely days full of learning and connecting with our peers from around the United States and the world!

As a preview to some of the things you will experience while in Tulsa, check out Erik Linthorst's website where you can preview the award winning film Autistic-Like Graham's Story. A special screening of the film will be shown on the evening of April 14th followed by a panel discussion with Erik Linthorst himself sharing the experiences of his parenting journey!
